In March of 2021 Grand Haven students young 5’s-4th grade were given the book Call Me Max, featuring a transgender main character, as part of a program to encourage literacy.
After parents complained The Curriculum Director attempted to shift blame to the teachers by claiming she didn’t review every title on the list. Instead of following board policy and listening to parent concerns, she arranged meetings with activists to “plan their next moves together.”
Did you know there were teaches who were against providing this book to their students? Some of them banded together and stood up for their beliefs and our children. Mary Jane Evink, the GHAPS Director of Educational Services speaks about those teachers in this video.
