The DEIB Committee prepared a slide presentation entitled “What is CRT and How do I address it?” The presentation is a playbook that instructs teachers on how to answer parent questions regarding Critical Race Theory.
It is likely this presentation which prompted a teacher at Grand Haven High School to write the following email to GHAPS administration explaining that she does in fact teach Critical Race Theory. She was requesting guidance on how to proceed going forward.
In response to her email, the GHAPS Curriculum Director Mary Jane Evink basically tells the teacher to continue teaching Critical Race Theory, but tells her not to call it CRT. Then she goes on to say tell parents,
“There is no room in our curriculum to teach it. We have a hard enough time teaching the state standards that are assigned to us, and it is not in the state standards. It is developmentally inappropriate to teach to this age group. The State Superintendent of Schools has clearly stated that Critical Race Theory is not part of any Michigan school curriculum.”
She flat out tells this teacher to teach Critical Race Theory, change the name and lie to parents. This is unacceptable. The email is included below so you can read it for yourself. Shocking!
This email is proof that Critical Race Theory (CRT) is being taught at Grand Haven Area Public Schools, and that teachers are being told to lie and state they do not teach Critical Race Theory. In a previous article, it was shown that CRT is “far too complex and nuanced for this level of education”. What ever happened to integrity?
